President’s Message
|
Dear Members,
I hope this newsletter finds all members and their families happy and in good health! Hopefully, the hottest of the weather is past and our shoots will be a little more comfortable. At our P-2K matches, we are still trying to create new shoots that will be fun as well as challenging enough so we can all become better shooters. In regards to the latter, Rob’s bench shooting match showed most of us need some real practice!
But there is an even bigger problem. If we do not get enough shooters at each match, our treasury will soon be out of money. P-2K charges us $120 per Sunday, which means we need at least 12 shooters @ $10 per person. We’ve been averaging around 8 shooters. You do the math. We need you to show up! The dues alone barely, if even, cover the newsletter.
If you have not paid your dues, please do so! We also need people to volunteer as Range Officers. One day a year, RO’s are needed for the months of January, May, and June. You can design your own match, be it as simple as silhouettes, or multi novelty targets. PLEASE contact me if you are willing to help us out!
Designing and purchasing business cards are in the works and will be available soon. In the mean time, keep a copy of your newsletter in your car to hand out to interested people. MAKE SURE you scratch out all names and phone numbers except for board members.
I learned a lot from the Buffalo Diagram submitted last month by Joanne Frasier. Thank you Joanne! Who will be next with an interesting article for submission in the November newsletter?
Looks like Tony is setting up a fun shoot for October! I’m sure going to bring my pistol! See you ALL there!
Doug
OCTOBER SHOOT
Oil up those pistols or revolvers and bring them out to the October Pistol Match! No pistol? No problem, shoot your long gun, we just won’t make the pistol shooters try to out score you.
We’ll also have a drop the flag event, a V match, and a stake shoot. See you there!
Submissions – SDCML welcomes your submissions. Please share your valuable experience, events, or articles. Do you have a story to tell regarding muzzleloading, or knowledge to share? Do you have a skill someone might want to learn? Let’s expand our newsletter! Send your submissions to:

Club meeting started at 7:05 P.M. on 9/24/12.
Old Business
The club still has a small quantity of 2f powder available to club members. Interested parties may contact Matt Lowrie @ 619-231-4883 for further information.
Joe Woof may be wearing a new hat with the club logo on it. Come check out the new headgear at our third Sunday shoot. If enough members are interested, we can put in an order. Joe can give you details at the shoot.
We are planning to be listed as a Charter club of the NMLRA. We will be listed in their magazine, Muzzle Blasts.
Business cards for SDCML were discussed. It is felt that the cards could provide a potential source of new members for the club.
New Business
Glenn Harris brought up the idea of recycling our newsletters by passing them out to others who may have an interest in our club. We can make double use of our newsletters.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:10 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Matthew Lowrie

SDCML Project 2000 Match Results
16 September, 2012
San Diego County Muzzle Loaders monthly shoot was held at Project 2000.
Thankfully the day was a little cooler than the day before, and a gentle breeze prevailed. Eight shooters showed up along with R.O. Rob Brandt. Teams of 4 were formed for the Drop the Flag contest. As fate would have it the Steves and Matt Lowrie formed one team. That would be Steve VanWormer, Steve Deitz, and Steve Waterbury. They quickly renamed Matt as Secretary Steve, to make it four Steves! Trent Alford, Glen Harris, Joe Woof and Tim Gilkey formed the other team. It turned out the Steves prevailed with a score of 75 and one string cut. Trent, Joe, Tim and Glen came up with a 65.
Chunk Gun matches were the order of the day. All shooting was from the bench. The first match was to be the Tom Word Kentucky Windage. Three shots at the NMLRA SX target, the shot closest to the X wins. Matt Lowrie at 1 4/16 in., Tim Gilkey at 1 6/16 in, and Glen Harris at 1 13/16 in. were one, two and three.
Next Match was the Jerry Schumacher, the one shot closest to the X, sighter and shaders allowed. Three shots at your sighting target and then three for score at your scoring target which you slide under your sighter target, hoping your group goes in the same place. Glen Harris came in first with a 7/16 in., Trent Alford, second at 13/16 in., and third place was Joe Woof at 1 in.
The third Match was the Gale Bloomster, using the same SX target, sighters and shaders allowed, but in this match all three of your shots were counted as a total string length for the X center. Steve (so glad to have you back and shooting again) VanWormer was first with a 3 7/16 in. Then Tim Gilkey with his 4 15/16 in. Third place went to Trent Alford with a 5 in. effort. Quite close shooting by these gentlemen.
The total string for all three matches was then added up with the results as follows:
Tim Gilkey 8 -7/16 in.
Trent Alford 9-13/16 in.
Steve VanWormer 9-15/16 in.
Joe Woof 10-6/16 in.
Glen Harris 11-2/16 in.
Steve Dietz 13 – 9/16 in.
Matt Lowrie 15 in.
Steve Waterbury was given a DNF for not turning in his scoring targets for the last two matches. His 2 – 15/16 in. for the first match was right with the others. The mystery of the muzzle loading shooter’s mind.
Submitted by Rob Brandt, R.O. for Sept.
Lemon Grove Match
|
Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club held its Black Powder Rifle Shoot on Sunday, September 16th. Fourteen people shot the match. Targets were disk swingers set at 20 yards, Ram silhouettes set at 50 yards, and a buffalo swinger set at 100 yards. Joanne Frazier won the match. Trent Alford took second. Dave Boyle took third. Trent Alford, Steve Van Wormer and Steve Waterbury were shooting flintlocks. Andy Dixon donated a powder flask for a poker-hand prize. A playing card was drawn by the shooter for every target they hit. Gary Williams won the poker-hand with a pair of aces.

The muzzleloaders always welcome newcomers, beginners and spectators that might be interested in this discipline. We provide very nice medals for first, second and third place. Each month there is a designated medallion target. The winner gets a nice medallion with the SBRGC logo (unless they already received one during the current year). Chuck won the September medallion. Chuck and Bill were our flintlock shooters (F).
